Hi,
Iam an "Oakland Girl " as well, only a couple of decades earlier than you. I too love Oakland and am so pleased to see the Fruitvale District cleaned up and active and enjoying cultural events. Now, if only the City of Oakland can come down a couple of blocks and clean up 69th Ave. and Martin Luther King Blvd. ( aka East 14th ) Sadly, all of my childhood memories and my cultural events ( Portuguese ) have been shattered by the inner city takeover. Our club /hall on 71st Ave. was burnt to the ground in the late 70's. My family's neigborhood destroyed and has become crack haven. It happened in a flash... so you keep on Lonely Girl, keep the dream alive, keep writing about your hometown.

BTW, what happened to every tree, vegetable garden /fruit flower, bush, shrub, blade of grass that I recall. The only way I could recognize the old neighborhood is because CP Bannon Mortuary looks exactly as it did in the 50's.... Go Figure!

I checked out SF's Day of the Dead celebration last year and you describe it perfectly. Funny how any celebration that draws a large crowd in SF gets used as an outlet for people's agendas that often have nothing to do with the event ;) Anyway, I think it's awesome that people keep Day of Dead celebrations going in the Bay Area, no matter how different from the original ones they may be!
